What is HackMIT?

HackMIT was founded in 2014 and is hosted by the MIT Hackathon Association. It is one of the largest and most influential campus hackathons in the United States. As an officially supported MIT event, HackMIT is highly recognised in academia and supported by numerous technology companies. Over more than a decade of development, it has attracted more than 13,000 students and generated nearly 2,000 projects, becoming an important platform for discovering and nurturing future technology leaders.
HackMIT China 2027
Following the successful conclusion of the inaugural China edition in 2026, this 36-hour hackathon challenge, officially hosted by the MIT Hackathon Association and open to high school students worldwide, will once again bring together young students passionate about innovation. Participants will use coding to solve real-world problems and creativity to shape a better future.
Programme Details
Audience: Grade 7–12 (12–18 years) — individual participants or teams of 2–5
Date: 26-28 March 2027
Location: Greater Bay Area, China (venue to be confirmed)

Track Overview
HackMIT China 2027 features two competition tracks: the Iteration Track and the Prototype Development Track. After completing registration and team formation, teams may confirm their final competition track based on their technical capabilities and competition objectives. Final confirmation of the track is not required at the registration stage.
Iteration Track: Teams may participate with a phased project completed before the event. Teams must complete iterative upgrades and optimizations to the project based on the iteration directions given by the judges on site within the 36-hour event period, and clearly state the core content of the iterative optimization upon submission. For details, see Chapter Project Submission Requirements.
Focuses on the scope, quality, and improvement logic of the project iteration completed within the 36 hours, while also evaluating the project's innovation, technical depth, and implementation value.
Prototype Development Track: Teams must complete the creative conception and development of the project from scratch on-site during the event. Pre-developed phased projects are strictly prohibited from being brought into the competition. For details, see Chapter 8. Project Submission Requirements.
Focuses on the completeness of the project built from scratch, the efficiency of creative implementation, and technical implementation capabilities, while also evaluating the project's innovation and social value.
Theme Setting
For teams participating in the Iteration Track, teams must select one of the four fixed themes as the focus of their project. For teams participating in the Prototype Development Track, HHCC will announce one exclusive mystery theme on-site, which is the only theme available for the Prototype Development Track. The theme will be officially announced at the start of the event.

Application Process & Newcomer's Journey
Step 1: Submit Your Application - Complete the application form to begin your HackMIT China journey.
Step 2: Claim Your Newcomer Welcome Kit - Receive a Beginner's Guide to Hackathons, a tech-stack quick guide, breakdowns of past winning projects, and a weekly study planner — all written in plain language to answer the question on every newcomer's mind: “What actually happens during those 36 hours?” No coding background is required.
Step 3: Get Matched with Your Dream Team - Complete a short team-building form covering your skill level, areas of interest, and preferred role. Our team will match you with teammates whose skills complement yours and whose interests align with yours. We'll kick things off with an online icebreaker, and you may request one rematch up to two weeks before the event. Sign up alone, and you will still never be alone.
Step 4: Level Up with Our Weekly Online Workshops - HackMIT chairs, industry guests, and past participants will lead sessions covering everything from hackathon basics and technology selection to hands-on web, hardware, and mobile app workshops. The first three sessions are open to everyone, including students who have not yet registered.
Step 5: Develop Your Project with Mentors - Explore a beginner-friendly idea library and join mentor office hours to brainstorm your concept one-to-one or in small groups with the academic team. Submit your initial idea one week before the event to receive written feedback on feasibility and suggested directions.
Step 6: Ask Anytime and Stay on Track - An ever-growing technology FAQ and online Q&A group, together with regular team check-ins, will help you overcome challenges as they arise — no last-minute cramming required.
Step 7: Arrive On-Site and Build with Confidence - After the opening ceremony, a dedicated newcomer session will walk you through everything you need to know. A Help Desk will be available throughout the event, while MIT mentors will be on hand and offer one-to-one bookings. Mid-event check-ins with each team will help you stay on track, build a working prototype, and prepare your final pitch.
No Matter Who You Are, You Are Welcome to Join the Challenge
Whether you are a coding expert or new to innovation, and no matter which school or city you come from, the HackMIT China stage is open to you. There are no barriers based on background — only a passion for innovation, creativity, and the opportunity to explore new possibilities.
