Teachers Love ChatGPT. Here is How It is Saving Them Time

A recent evaluation report from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) sheds light on the potential advantages of using Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools, specifically ChatGPT, in lesson preparation for K-12 educators. Conducted between December 2023 and December 2024, the study aimed to assess the impact of ChatGPT on teacher workload and lesson quality in secondary schools.

The research involved 34 schools and 259 teachers, who were randomly assigned to either a ChatGPT group or a non-GenAI control group. Science teachers in Years 7 and 8 participated, using ChatGPT for lesson preparation while the control group relied on traditional methods without any GenAI assistance.

Key findings from the study revealed that teachers utilizing ChatGPT spent 69% of the time compared to their peers in the non-GenAI group on lesson and resource preparation. Specifically, ChatGPT users averaged approximately 56.2 minutes per week on preparations, saving an average of 25.3 minutes each week. This finding has a high security rating, indicating robust results.

Interestingly, while teachers in the ChatGPT group saved time, the quality of lesson resources produced by both groups was deemed similar, according to expert evaluations. As the trial progressed, however, the frequency of ChatGPT usage decreased, suggesting that teachers gradually transitioned from the initial learning phase to integrating the tool into their regular practice.

Teachers reported utilizing the time saved for other lesson planning tasks or to reduce their overall workload. Despite the reduced prep time, many educators maintained that there was no significant difference in pupil learning outcomes between lessons prepared with and without ChatGPT.

The study also highlighted the varying levels of confidence among teachers in using technology, with those more comfortable with technology experiencing greater time savings. The findings suggest that ChatGPT has the potential to enhance teachers’ lesson planning efficiency without compromising educational quality.

As schools continue to explore innovative solutions to combat teacher workload and recruitment challenges, this report presents significant implications for the future use of AI tools in education. The insights gained from this trial could pave the way for more widespread adoption of GenAI in classrooms, supporting teachers in their vital roles.
