Is Too Much Screen Time Harming Children’s Mental Health? Here’s What Experts Say

A recent study conducted by the University of Jyväskylä in Finland highlights the significant impact of screen time on children’s mental health, suggesting that limiting screen exposure and encouraging physical activity can help safeguard adolescents from mental health issues. The research, which followed 187 adolescents over an eight-year period, reveals alarming trends linking excessive screen time to increased stress and depressive symptoms.

Key Findings
  1. Screen Time and Mental Health: The study found that children who spent more time on screens, particularly mobile devices, experienced higher levels of stress and depressive symptoms during adolescence.
  2. Physical Activity Benefits: In contrast, higher levels of physical activity and participation in organised sports were associated with lower stress levels and fewer depressive symptoms. However, the correlation between physical activity and depressive symptoms was weaker than that of screen time.
  3. Combined Effects: Adolescents with both high screen time and low physical activity reported the highest levels of stress and depressive symptoms, underscoring the need for a balanced lifestyle.
  4. Recommendations for Screen Time: The study supports international guidelines recommending that leisure screen time for children and adolescents be limited to two hours per day. However, lead researcher Dr. Eero Haapala suggests that even this limit may be excessive.
  5. Call for Lifestyle Changes: The findings emphasise the importance of promoting healthy habits early in life. Dr. Haapala advocates for a societal effort, involving families and policymakers, to encourage balanced screen time, adequate physical activity, proper sleep, and nutritious diets.

The study serves as a crucial reminder of the risks associated with excessive screen time and the need for proactive measures to foster healthier lifestyles among children and adolescents.
