Classroom Discussion Shown to Play Vital Role in Developing Writing Skills

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Exeter has highlighted the vital role that classroom discussions play in the teaching of writing. The research underscores the importance of managing classroom talk to foster students’ understanding of the choices writers make and how these choices affect readers. 

The study, which was part of a three-year project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), examined classroom interactions in Year 9 English classes. Dr. Ruth Newman, who led the research, observed that effective management of classroom discussions helps students reflect on their writing choices, ultimately enhancing their writing skills. 

Key findings from the study include: 
  • Importance of Discussion: The research emphasises the necessity of dedicating time to exploratory discussions in English lessons. This type of dialogue encourages students to share their initial impressions and ideas about the texts they read, which can deepen their engagement and understanding. 
  • Scaffolding Discussions: The study found that teachers should scaffold discussions by explicitly linking the language choices of writers to their intended effects. Vague questioning or poorly structured discussions can hinder students’ understanding and limit meaningful dialogue. 
  • Engagement Strategies: Dr. Newman noted that carefully led discussions can help students consider how language choices shape meaning. This is particularly important for students who may be less confident in contributing to discussions, as they may require additional support to access textual meanings and articulate their thoughts. 

Dr. Newman stated, “The study reinforces the importance of teachers finding space in lessons for everyone to respond to texts in a speculative and exploratory way. This engagement not only captivates students’ interest but also allows teachers to gauge their understanding.” 

The findings suggest that fostering a rich dialogue around writing can significantly impact students’ learning and their ability to make informed language choices in their own writing. The study also advocates for professional development for teachers to enhance their skills in facilitating effective discussions about writing.
