Alarming Decline in UK Children’s Reading Enjoyment Raises Concerns Over Literacy Levels

Recent research from the National Literacy Trust (NLT) has unveiled a troubling decline in the enjoyment of reading among children and young people, signaling a potential literacy crisis. The report reveals that in 2024, only 34.6% of children aged 8 to 18 expressed enjoyment in reading during their free time, a significant drop from 43.4% in 2023. This marks the lowest level of reading enjoyment recorded since the NLT began the survey in 2005 and the first time it has dipped below 40%.

  • Gender Disparity: The decline in reading enjoyment is notably severe among boys, with only 28.2% indicating they enjoy reading, compared to 40.5% of girls. This has widened the gender gap from 4.8 percentage points last year to 12.3 percentage points this year. 
  • Impact on Age Groups: The report highlights that secondary school students, particularly those aged 11 to 16, have faced the most drastic decline in reading enjoyment. This decrease is more pronounced than that seen in younger children aged 8 to 11. 
  • Daily Reading Habits: Alarmingly, only 20.5% of children in the 8 to 18 age range reported reading something daily in their free time, a decrease from 28% in 2023. Among boys, this figure is even lower at 17.5%, compared to 23.2% for girls. 
Contributing Factors: 

Several factors are believed to be influencing this decline in reading enjoyment: 

  • Impact of the Pandemic: The long-lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted children’s reading habits, with many struggling to engage with texts outside of academic requirements. 
  • Curriculum Pressures: A highly demanding curriculum and elevated academic expectations may leave little time for leisure reading, making it less likely for children to choose reading as a relaxing pastime. 
  • Access to Materials: Economic challenges and limited access to quality reading materials, exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis, may further hinder children’s opportunities to engage with books.
