The Scholarship Application Checklist: Every Student’s Must-Dos

Here are the essential steps every student should follow when applying for scholarships:
Research Scholarship Opportunities

Start by researching various scholarship opportunities that align with your academic achievements, extracurricular activities and personal background. Explore scholarships offered by your school, local organisations, national foundations and online.

Note Deadlines and Requirements

Create a spreadsheet or calendar to track deadlines for each scholarship application. Carefully review the eligibility criteria, required documents and submission guidelines to ensure you meet all the requirements.

Prepare Transcripts and Test Scores

Request official transcripts from your school and any colleges you’ve attended. If required, gather any test scores (SAT, ACT, etc.) and have them ready for submission.

Draft Personal Statements and Essays

Many scholarship applications require personal statements or essays. Start drafting these well in advance, allowing ample time for revisions and proofreading. Tailor each essay to the specific scholarship’s context and requirements.

Gather Letters of Recommendation

Identify teachers, coaches or mentors who can provide strong letters of recommendation. Give them ample notice and provide them with the necessary information about the scholarship and your achievements.

Compile a Resume or CV

Create or update your Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) to highlight your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, work experience and any significant honours or awards you’ve received.

Complete Financial Aid Forms

If the scholarship requires information about your financial situation, complete any relevant financial aid forms.

Submit Applications in Good Time

Double-check that you have all the required documents and information before submitting your applications. Submit well before the deadlines to avoid any last-minute issues.

Follow Up and Express Gratitude

After submitting your applications, follow up with the scholarship providers if you haven’t received confirmation of receipt. If awarded a scholarship, be sure to express your gratitude to the organization and any individuals who supported your application.

By following this checklist, you will increase your chances of securing scholarships and funding your education. Remember, staying organised and meeting all requirements is crucial for a successful scholarship application process.

We advise you never to exaggerate any details in your scholarship application as this can lead to the disqualification of the scholarship. It is also vital to ensure your essays and personal statements are original and written in your own words.

Many students make the mistake of using a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to scholarship applications. By tailoring essays, personal statements and other materials to the specific scholarship’s criteria and requirements, this can increase your chances of success.
